Skiing and Boarding Terms:

  • Greens – Green runs are easiest terrain at any resort, usually not very steep and groomed. This terrain is best for beginner skiers and boarders.
  • Blues – Blue runs are intermediate terrain. Trend to be groomed and steeper than green runs. This terrain is perfect for intermediate skiers and boarders.
  • Blacks – Difficult terrain, which can be very steep runs or runs with moguls. This terrain is great for advanced skiers and boarders.
  • Double Blacks – Expert terrain, which includes very steep terrain with chutes, cliffs and tight trees. This terrain is best for advanced skiers and boarders.
  • Cliff Hucks – When someone skis or boards off of a cliff.
  • Terrain Park – 
    • Feature – A structure built for a specific set of tricks.
    • Rails – A metal bar, you can use to slide across.
    • Boxes – A box you can use to slide across.
    • Park Rat – A rider who mainly skis or boards only in the park.
    • Jump Line – Riding jump after jump after jump.
    • Features Sizes – S=Small, S/M=small-medium, M=medium, M/L=medium-large, L=large and XL=extra large.
    • Park Crew – Employees who create and maintain park features.
    • Butter – When the skis or boards bend due to pressure. It looks like you are spreading butter (snow) on toast (the ground).
    • Jib – Riding over a surface that is not snow; rail, box, etc.
  • Rad – Very awesome/cool/radical etc.
  • Rollers – A small hill in the middle of the run created by the natural terrain of the mountain.
  • Moguls – Bumps carved into the snow, typically down an entire run.
  • Bowls – A wide rounded area in the mountain, mostly clear of trees. 
  • Glades – Large area of open trees.
  • Bunny Hill – Area specifically for beginners. Usually used for lessons.
  • Hike to Terrain – Terrain you can only access if you hike to it.
  • Gulch – A narrow and steep area created by water.
  • Chute – Steep gully usually surrounded by rocks, considered expert terrain.
  • Playful Terrain – Terrain that allows the rider to use a freestyle type of riding. This means using the resort’s natural terrain to do tricks on/over.
  • Fresh tracks – Being the first person to ski through fresh snow and being able to see your own tracks.
  • Cat Track – A flatter run created by the Snowcats, which helps riders get to different areas of the resort easily and safely.
  • Cat – The snow cats are huge machines (like a small snow tank) that are used to make groomed runs, but some are used to take skiers and boarders to special parts of the mountain.
  • Looker’s Left/Right – When looking at the mountain from the base/bottom of the resort, this is your right or left.
  • Skier’s Left/Right – When on top of the resort and you’re riding down, this is your right or left.
