Wolf Creek

Terrain:

Even though Wolf Creek’s terrain is aimed more towards the intermediate to advanced skiers and boarders, there is still plenty of beginner terrain. The beginner terrain has a nice progression into intermediate terrain. There is an entire area just for beginners who want to learn. Then, the intermediate blue terrain near the base is easy to progress to. This terrain is off of Raven Chair. It is not too steep and helps get beginners used to longer runs. The rest of the intermediate terrain starts to get a little steeper and longer. This helps riders explore the mountain. As for terrain parks, Wolf Creek is one of the resorts that has none.

As you start to get into the expert terrain, there are some casual glades and some gnarly double blacks as well. Wolf Creek is filled with great bowls that are hikable from the lifts. Some are less of a hike than others and some bowls you just need to traverse to inorder to reach the summit. On a great powder day, which seems to happen often here, these bowls are endless fun. There is even free cat skiing accessed terrain, but you have to hike from Albert lift over to where the cat picks you up. This cat brings you to Horseshoe Bowl where you can easily find some fresh tracks throughout the day. Quick warning, do not stand in the back of the cat while riding it because it can be slippery and packed with people who could possibly bump you off. To get to most of the expert terrain, it does require a decent amount of hiking depending on which area you are trying to hit. I spent the majority of my time hiking to different expert terrain areas and never regretted it, although my legs felt it the next day.

Atmosphere and Locals:

Wolf Creek has a great local presence on the mountain. The resort also gets a decent crowd from Northern New Mexico because it is their closest mountain. Due to the amazing terrain and amount of snow Wolf Creek gets in a season, it is not hard to find many advanced skiers and boarders. It was inspiring to watch others send some insane cliffs and rad runs while riding the lifts. The locals were very friendly and wanted to enjoy the advanced terrain with others. You can always find people who rave about Wolf Creek no matter where you are in Colorado.

Accessibility and Parking:

Wolf Creek has free parking below the base and a free shuttle. If you do not wish to walk uphill in all your gear, the shuttle will pick you up right by your car and take you to the base. This was an added cherry on top of this great resort. Although the road to Wolf Creek can be less than pleasant. HWY 160 to and from Wolf Creek is a winding mountain road. Since, Wolf Creek gets the most snow in Colorado, this means the road does as well. Thus, I highly, highly recommend bringing chains in your car when you drive because you will most likely need them if a storm has just come through.
